This GIS dataset depicts the surficial geology of the Falher Area (NTS 83N/NW) (line features). The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

These data comprise the line features of Alberta Geological Survey Map 556, Surficial Geology of the Falher Area (NTS 83N/NW).

Purpose:

We derived the linear surficial features from field work and aerial photograph interpretation. Features were adjusted so they aligned with like features in adjacent study areas (edge matched). Where directionality was present, we digitized the lines in the paleoflow direction. Line features intersect only where intended. The authoring geologist made visual checks of the attributes, and a third party checked plotted versions of the data.
Completeness Report:
Data were compiled initially through airphoto interpretation and were verified in selected locations during field mapping. Due to access constraints, the number of field sites was limited.

Accuracy of the surface feature interpretations is estimated to be better than +/- 100 m on the ground, based on informed judgement of the effects of all combined map production errors. No formal accuracy check was done to verify the interpretation; however, field site data provided control on interpretation. Site locations were measured with handheld GPS units, the error of which is estimated at better than +/- 10 m on the ground. The root mean square error during georeferencing of the scanned airphoto images was less than +/- 35 m.

Our processes included

1. interpreting the airphoto;

2. scanning each 1:60 000 airphoto as a gray-scale, 1200 dpi TIFF;

3. georeferencing images using 1:20 000 scale provincial digital base data (i.e., hydrography and roads) for control;

4. digitizing line features from each image individually and reconciling edge discrepancies;

5. labelling spatial features;

6. checking quality of digital file; and

7. proofreading text.
