Description:
Abstract:
This map depicts the new 1:1 000 000 sediment thickness map of Alberta prepared by the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). This map updates the sediment thickness portrayed in AGS Map 603.
The thickness and distribution of sediments overlying the bedrock surface in Alberta is highly varied, with modelled values ranging from less that 1 m to as much as 360 m. These sediments include Neogene fluvial deposits, glacigenic materials deposited during Quaternary glaciations, as well as postglacial sediments.
The thickness and distribution of sediments overlying bedrock in Alberta was produced by subtracting a newly revised bedrock topography gridded surface of Alberta that was generated using machine learning techniques from a land surface digital elevation model (DEM). The land surface DEM was generated at a 500 m grid cell size using the aggregate tool in ArcGIS to resample the DEM at a coarser resolution that would be appropriate for a provincial-scale model. The newly generated bedrock topography grid is represented in AGS Map 610, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, Version 2 and available in AGS Digital Data 2020-0022. The sediment thickness grid represented in AGS Map 611 is also available in AGS Digital Data 2020-0023.
Purpose:
To update
previous reconstructions of the sediment thickness of Alberta.

Accuracy Report:
The sediment thickness was calculated by subtracting the
modelled bedrock topography gridded surface from a land surface digital
elevation model resampled to a 500 m by 500 m grid. Any errors in the modelled
bedrock topography are also present in the sediment thickness grid. The 500 m
digital elevation model will vary from higher resolution models; however, for
the purposes of a provincial-scale grid the detail provided in a
high-resolution digital elevation model is not necessary.
Logical
Consistency Report:
Sediment thickness gridded data portrayed on this map are
available in AGS Digital Data 2020-2023. The gridded data indicate the thickness
of sediments in metres that lie above the bedrock topography grid (AGS Digital
Data 2020-0022). The grid was exported as a continuous surface in ArcGIS ASCII
grid format. The grid cell spacing is 500 m by 500 m, and any grid cells with a
null value have been assigned the value -9999.
Completeness
Report:
Machine learning techniques were used to model the bedrock
topography grid. Input data for the bedrock topography used multi-source input
data of variable quality. Bedrock topography picks that were identified as
outliers by an AGS geologist were excluded from the modelling process. The
bedrock topography grid and a resampled land surface digital elevation model
were used to calculate the sediment thickness grid.
Positional
Accuracy:
Horizontal
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal
Positional Accuracy Report:
Bedrock topography picks used to generate the gridded
surface were from a variety of sources that have inherent location errors. The
sediment thickness was calculated from the bedrock topography grid and a land
surface digital elevation model. At the 500 m grid cell size the bedrock
topography and ground surface were rendered at, any horizontal positional error
will have little impact on the accuracy of the grid considering this is a
provincial-scale grid and not intended for local scale studies.
Vertical
Positional Accuracy:
Vertical
Positional Accuracy Report:
The vertical positional error of the bedrock topography
grid, which was used to calculate the sediment thickness grid is a function of
the quality of the pick set, including data density, the surface complexity
(i.e. topographic variability), and the removal of points from the pick set
that are identified as outliers. The occurrence of vertical errors has been
mitigated by ensuring the bedrock topography picks were estimated from the same
land surface datum, assessing the quality of the data, and then geostatistically evaluating the data points to identify and
remove outliers.

applicable for site specific studies. The sediment thickness grid was produced
in Transverse Mercator projection using the North American Datum 1983 (NAD83).
