    Description
Abstract: This digital data release provides laboratory-measured rock mechanical, thermal expansion, and acoustic velocity data for drillcore samples from the Precambrian basement and Basal Cambrian Sandstone in Alberta. The dataset includes:

• The results of multistage triaxial compression testing on 24 samples under confining pressures of 8.27 MPa (1200 psi), 15.17 MPa (2200 psi), 28.96 MPa (4200 psi), and 42.75 MPa (6200 psi). Tests were conducted at temperatures from 67°C to 198°C to simulate in situ temperature conditions. Axial loading during stages 1 to 3 was stopped when volumetric strain transition (VST) from compaction to dilation was observed. Stage 4 was loaded to failure to determine peak strength. Not all samples completed all four stages due to early failure or testing anomalies.
• The results of thermal expansion and ultrasonic acoustic velocity testing on a separate batch of 10 samples, conducted under hydrostatic conditions. Samples were heated from near-ambient to approximately 200°C. Axial and radial strains were recorded continuously, and P-wave and S-wave velocities were measured before and after heating.
• High-resolution computed tomography (CT) images for all samples prior to testing, used to document internal rock features such as foliation, veining, and microfractures. Post-test CT scans of the 17 triaxial samples were used to identify shear failure planes, compaction features, and damage patterns.
Derived outputs include compressive strength, stress at VST, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, Mohr–Coulomb failure parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle), thermal expansion coefficients, and temperature-dependent acoustic velocities.
Data quality was supported by calibrated instrumentation, repeat measurements, and CT imaging. This dataset provides key inputs for geothermal, geomechanical, and subsurface modelling studies in Alberta’s basement and deep sedimentary formations.

This work was completed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta dated June 22, 2021.
Purpose: To provide high-quality laboratory data on rock strength, static elastic properties, thermal expansion, and acoustic properties for selected Precambrian basement and Basal Cambrian Sandstone samples in Alberta. This dataset is intended to support geothermal resource and geomechanical characterization of the subsurface, with a focus on the Precambrian basement.

  Attribute_Accuracy
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: All attributes in this dataset are as received from the laboratories or as derived through subsequent interpretation. Measurements for triaxial strength, thermal expansion, and acoustic velocity are recorded with precision provided by the testing laboratories.
Logical_Consistency_Report: The spatial locations of all samples are unique. In some cases, several samples were taken from drillcore from the same well, but at different depths, resulting in duplication of unique well identifiers (UWI) and geographic coordinates (longitude, latitude). Samples from Phanerozoic sedimentary rock strata cannot be assigned to Precambrian basement domain, therefore, the Domain attribute for those samples received the value 'NA' (not applicable).
High-temperature, high-confining-pressure rock mechanics testing was performed to determine unconfined compressive strength, cohesion, frictional properties, elastic moduli, and thermal expansion.
Sources of Error and Limitations
•	Volumetric strain may not clearly indicate yield in poorly lithified or high-porosity samples.
•	Multi-stage loading can introduce progressive damage, potentially affecting late-stage measurements.
•	Ultrasonic velocity readings may vary with sensor coupling or rock heterogeneity.
•	Uneven heating or thermal gradients may influence thermal expansion measurements.
•	CT resolution is limited for detecting fine-scale fractures or porosity.
Completeness_Report: Many basement-penetrating wells did not recover core, and recovered material was often too altered, fractured, or incomplete for sample-plug preparation. A larger proportion of available samples came from shallower intersections (<2 km) in the northeastern and north-central regions, where drilling activity has historically been more frequent. Fewer samples were recovered from deeper intersections, limiting direct representation of higher-temperature basement conditions in the dataset. Sample selection was therefore constrained primarily by availability of specimens and did not allow for systematic coverage of specific tectonic domains. All data records with sufficient information were selected from described sources. Null values are reported as -9999.
  Positional_Accuracy
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The locations of the oil and gas wells may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling.
    Vertical_Positional_Accuracy
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Samples were collected based on core depth relative to the well's kelly bushing (KB). Core depth was referenced to the depth interval recorded on the core box.

   Process_Description: Sampling
Core samples were obtained from boreholes that penetrated the Precambrian basement in Alberta. While the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) hosts hundreds of thousands of wells, only a few hundred extend into the crystalline basement. Sample selection was therefore constrained primarily by availability of specimens and did not allow for systematic coverage of specific tectonic domains. The depth to the top of the basement in Alberta varies significantly from outcrop at surface in the far northeast (Canadian Shield) to depths exceeding 4 km near the Cordilleran deformation front in the southwest. A larger proportion of available samples came from shallower intersections (<2 km) in the northeastern and north-central regions, where drilling activity has historically been more frequent. Fewer samples were recovered from deeper intersections, limiting direct representation of higher-temperature basement conditions in the dataset.
Sample locations were selected by the authors of this publication and then cut from drill cores by AGS staff at the AER’s Core Research Centre, Calgary. The samples were further prepared, e.g., trimmed to a target length-to-diameter ratio of approximately 2:1 (minimum 1.4:1) by Core Laboratories, Houston. Ends were ground flat and parallel. Dimensions were measured at multiple points along the sample length and circumference. Samples tested in the triaxial apparatus were jacketed in fluoropolymer tubing to isolate them from the confining medium. A core analysis report by Core Laboratories detailing the methodology for triaxial compression, thermal expansion, and acoustic velocity testing (including an overview of results and a brief discussion of selected results) is provided as part of this digital data release. The methodology is summarized below.

Triaxial Compression Testing (24 samples)
• Testing was performed using a Core Lab RTX-4000 triaxial load frame. Axial and radial deformations were measured using paired linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) and chain gauges. Corrections were applied to remove platen deformation from the measurements.
• No pore pressure was applied.
• Samples were subjected to four stages of axial loading at confining pressures of 8.27, 15.17, 28.96, and 42.75 MPa. Temperatures ranged from approximately 67 to 198 °C based on the depth of the samples.
• Stages 1 to 3 were terminated (axial unloading) when volumetric strain transitioned from compaction to dilation, and stage 4 was loaded to failure. The early-stage axial stresses at VST were scaled relative to the peak strength observed in stage 4 to estimate the peak strengths at the lower confining pressures. Not all samples completed all four stages due to early failure or equipment-related issues.
• Reported outputs include compressive strength at each stage, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and Mohr–Coulomb parameters.
Thermal Expansion and Acoustic Velocity (10 samples)
• Testing was carried out at MetaRock Laboratories (Houston, Texas) using a hydrostatic pressure cell with an external heating sleeve. Axial and radial strains were measured during heating from near ambient to approximately 200°C at a rate of 18°C/hour. Ultrasonic velocities were recorded using embedded piezoelectric transducers at both low and high temperatures.
• Outputs include axial and radial thermal expansion coefficients, P-wave and S-wave velocities, and calculated dynamic moduli.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)
• Visual inspection for sample integrity and alteration prior to testing.
• Dimensional checks at multiple points for consistency.
• Calibration of LVDTs and correction for platen compliance.
• Use of volumetric strain behaviour to standardize unloading points in stages 1 to 3.
• Repeat testing for selected thermal and acoustic measurements.
• All samples were scanned using high-resolution computed tomography prior to testing. Images were used to assess sample readiness for triaxial tests including preexisting fractures, fabric, mineral veins, and heterogeneities. Voxel resolution ranged from 30 to 100 micrometres depending on sample size. Post-test CT data supported the interpretation of mechanical results and quality control.
• Documentation and flagging of any irregularities in testing (e.g., early failure, misalignment).

Derived outputs include compressive strength, stress at volumetric strain transition, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, Mohr–Coulomb failure parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle). Sample 24BA034 failed during the first stage of the multi-stage test. For sample 24BA067, during stage 4 loading at a differential stress of ~96.5 MPa, the specimen appears to have developed a leak, resulting in a flawed analysis for that stage. Mohr-Coulomb analysis is therefore conducted utilizing only the data from the first three stages.
