      Abstract: This digital data release includes the results from whole-rock lithogeochemical analyses of 57 samples from five unique drillcores intersecting coal seams in the Alberta portion of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The aim of this project was to generate a publicly available, comprehensive geochemical dataset for selected coal-bearing strata in Alberta. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) / Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) engaged Activation Laboratories Ltd. (Actlabs) to analyze the selected samples from May 2024 to July 2025. Actlabs used a combination of standard sample preparation and analysis packages specifically developed to quantify the major, minor and trace elements (including rare earth elements) of coal. Drillcore was selected for this project from the collections at the AGS Mineral Core Research Facility in Edmonton, based on the geospatial location, geological units intercepted, coal seam thickness, and condition of each drillcore. The intervals sampled were determined by coal seam distribution and core condition, and include coal, shale, siltstone, sandstone, and other associated lithologies. High-resolution core photos showing the locations of these measurement points will be made available through the AGS Alberta Interactive Minerals Map.This work was completed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta dated June 22, 2021.
      Purpose: The purpose of this publication is to publish the results from Part 2 of the Coal Core Geochemistry project under the Mineral Mapping Program.

  Completeness_Report: At the time of this writing, there are 679 coal cores stored at the Alberta Geological Survey's (AGS) Mineral Core Research Facility in Edmonton and eight coal cores stored at the Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER) Core Research Facility in Calgary. The five coal cores sampled for this project were selected from a subset of 40 cores that were previously analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques, the results of which are published in AGS Digital Data 2025-0007, based on geospatial location, geological units intersected, core condition, core length, and coal seam thickness, in conjunction with the elemental concentrations from the XRF results. The metadata for the coal cores sampled for this project are compiled in the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Core_List.txt", which includes the core identifiers, top and base depths, geospatial location, elevation, and stratigraphic intersections for each core. The AGS weighed and photographed each sample at the time of sample collection. These photographs and original sample weights are not included in this publication. Samples were collected at discrete points along the length of each core and are not necessarily representative of the composition of each core as a whole. The geochemical data for all 57 samples analyzed for this project, as well as the AGS-provided, blind-tested CRMs, are compiled in the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Data.txt". This dataset includes sub-sample weights before and after ashing (if applicable), the core depths corresponding to each sample, as well as results for all repeat analyses and overlimit analyses. All results are reported as received from the vendor; in the case of analytes reported on an ash basis, the results were not recalculated by AGS to a whole-coal basis. The analytical techniques used in this project include inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), Cold Vapor Flow Injection Mercury System (FIMS), combustion and infrared detection (IR), and thermogravimetric analysis. Actlabs provided method descriptions and quality control procedures for each analytical technique to the AGS. The analysis conditions are summarized in the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Det_Lim_Acc_Prec.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder, and the quality control procedures are summarized in the Data Quality section.Actlabs provided the results for the internal QC samples used for their quality control process as reports in portable document format (.pdf) and Excel Workbook (.xlsx) files. These results were compiled by AGS into the tab-delimited text file "Actlabs_Batch_QAQC.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder. The original files are not included in this publication.

   Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Geospatial location coordinates for the core drillholes were retrieved from the AER Geological Data Management (GDM) System. The coordinates listed in GDM were determined by industry surveys at the time of drilling and submitted to the AER by their respective companies. At the time of data entry, the AER converted these coordinates to unique well identifiers (UWIs) based on the Dominion Land Survey (DLS) system.All locations were checked for uniqueness. The error associated with the horizontal geospatial locations is unknown.

   Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: All depth values are reported as core depth measured along the length of the drillhole. Depth is assumed to be measured from the drilling rig collar location, at the ground surface.      Source_Contribution: The pXRF-measured concentrations of certain elements of interest (e.g., Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd) from this dataset were used in conjunction with lithologic observations to identify core intervals for sampling.
  Data_Quality_Information: Actlabs conducted their own internal quality control and data validation processes. All samples were crushed and pulverized prior to analysis to ensure homogeneity. Depending on the analysis methods used, each sample was then dried or ashed, to ensure that drying would not affect the analysis results for volatile parameters. The respective ashing temperatures for each method are included in the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Det_Lim_Acc_Prec.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder. Actlabs inserted internal analytical QC samples at regular intervals: preparation duplicate samples were used to ensure that prepared sub-samples were representative and evaluate precision; blank QC samples were used to check for contamination; standard reference materials were used to determine accuracy. Actlabs verified the data results using pre-defined acceptance criteria for the internal QC samples: +/-15% at greater than or equal to 100 times the detection limit for trace elements in sample duplicates and +/-5% at greater than or equal to 100 times the detection limit for major oxides in sample duplicates; <4 times the detection limit for blank samples; and 3 standard deviations for reference materials, with a warning limit at two standard deviations.If the results for any internal QC samples failed to meet the above acceptance criteria, the affected portion of the sample batch was re-analyzed.The results for the internal QC samples used by the laboratory were provided by Actlabs and compiled by AGS into the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Actlabs_Batch_QAQC.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder.The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) provided Actlabs with two certified reference materials (CRMs) for use as external QC samples: SARM 19 and OREAS 124, which were selected based on the similarity of their matrices to the lithologies expected in the coal cores and/or the analytes reported in their certificates, as well as their commercial availability at the time of project execution. These CRMs were anonymized for blind testing as CRM 1 (SARM 19) and CRM 2 (OREAS 124). More details on these CRMs, including their matrix material and source, are available in the tab-delimited text file named "DIG_2026-0002_CRM_Metadata.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder. The lab-reported geochemical compositions for CRM 1 and CRM 2 are compiled in the tab-delimited text files named "DIG_2026-0002_CRM1.txt" and "DIG_2026-0002_CRM2.txt", both located in the "QAQC" folder. In each analysis batch, Actlabs analyzed both AGS-provided CRMs every 20 samples to ensure accuracy and consistency. The CRM analysis results are included in the compiled dataset ("DIG_2026-0002_Data.txt"), denoted by "standard" in the "Type" column. Details on the detection limits, analytical methods, accuracy, and precision for each analyte measured by Actlabs for this project are compiled in the tab-delimited text file "DIG_2026-0002_Det_Lim_Acc_Prec.txt", located in the "QAQC" folder. The AGS quantified the accuracy and precision of the results from Actlabs as average percent recovery (APR) and relative standard deviation (2RSD), respectively. APR = 100 * CM / CE, where CM is the average measured concentration in the samples of the CRM analyzed by the vendor, and CE is the expected concentration in the CRM based on the certificate of analysis.2RSD = SD / CM * 200, where SD is the standard deviation in the CRM in the certificate of analysis, and CM is the average measured concentration in the samples of the CRM analyzed by the vendor. The certificate of analysis for CRM 1 did not include standard deviation values, so the AGS estimated the standard deviations based on the other information provided in the certificate. SD = sqrt(N)*(UCL - LCL)/(2*Z), where N = sample size (approximated as 28, based on the number of contributing laboratories listed in the certificate of analysis), UCL = upper confidence limit from certificate of analysis, LCL = lower confidence limit from certificate of analysis, Z = z-score corresponding to the confidence interval (1.96, based on the 95% confidence interval listed in the certificate of analysis).The "DIG_2026-0002_Det_Lim_Acc_Prec.txt" file includes footnote columns ("CRM_1_notes" and "CRM_2_notes") with additional details to provide context for the calculated accuracy and precision values.
