- Description:
Abstract: The Mineral Occurrences of Alberta dataset is a compilation of metallic and industrial mineral occurrences of economic interest from a variety of sources including government reports, government data, mineral assessment reports, technical industry reports, and other publicly available sources. Mineral occurrences comprise selected field sites where geological, geochemical, or geophysical evidence suggests the existence of a mineral system. The occurrences are classified based on development stage and status into producers, past producers, projects with resource estimate, prospects, showings, and anomalies (geochemical, geophysical, or geological). This dataset provides an update to the Metallic Mineral Occurrences of Alberta and Industrial Mineral Occurrences of Alberta datasets (AGS Digital Data 2019-0026 and 2019-0027) and merges them into a single data repository. Additional occurrences were added based on recent data and some of the historical records were updated. The occurrences described in this publication vary greatly in terms of commodity type, deposit type, and development stage. The mineral occurrence dataset was also restructured into a relational database with multiple linked tables using primary and foreign keys, enabling more efficient data manipulation and minimizing duplication. This publication includes a summary table that lists and describes all the mineral occurrences with additional information hosted in the other nine tables delivered in this release. This work was completed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta on June 22, 2021.
Purpose: To provide data on mineral occurrences found across the province.

Data_Quality_Information:
- Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Although effort was made to systematically verify the accuracy of each attribute, there may still be some inaccurate information, particularly for mineral grades reported in historical reports.Dev_Stage field definitions are as follows:Producer: Mineral concentration from which ore grade material currently is being extracted.Producer - by-product: a mineral concentration from which ore grade material currently is being extracted as a by-product of oil and gas, sand and gravel, or other industrial operations.Past producer: mineral deposit from which ore grade material has been extracted in the past; ore reserves, and grade may be known from production records.Project with resource estimate: property with a mineral concentration that has been drilled or investigated so that presence of ore grade material has been established, has completed a resource estimation (NI 43-101 compliant or not), and has an active surface disposition or mineral agreement. Access and recoverability are also favourable.Prospect: mineral concentration that has been drilled or investigated in some way which warrants further exploration. May or may not have an active mineral agreement.Showing: concentration of a mineral of economic interest which is anomalous by some measure, with no specified grade and size, and that may or may not warrant additional study. Access and recoverability may be unfavourable.Geochemical anomaly: location where at least one sample exceeds background concentrations for at least one element.Geological anomaly: location where a mineral system feature such us vein, veinlets, pods, pyrite concentration, alteration, gossan or other is present.Geophysical anomaly: location where radiometric, magnetic, electromagnetic, or gravity data differ from surrounding area.Test: Mineral occurrence which has indications of mineral content, but has been shown from assays or tests to lack economic mineral potential for the foreseeable future.
Logical_Consistency_Report: The data was compiled from a variety of public data sources including government reports, government data, mineral assessment reports, and technical industry reports.Original mineral ID numbers were collected from the primary sources. Work was done to complete attributes for historical records, however, some of the information was not provided by reports and some attributes remain blank.Although quality reviews were done to address attribute and text format inconsistencies, there may be a number of inconsistencies remaining in the dataset.
Completeness_Report: Some mineral occurrences represent many observations and test results from a report. As such, the location of the mineral occurrence may not fall on any single point of observation or sampling. Project and prospect mineral occurrence locations may represent an exploration property area with many observations and analytical test results.References in tblOccurrence, tblCommodity, tblGeology, tblHole, tblIndustrial, tblReference, tblSample, tblAnalyte, and tblSummaryMineralOccurrences are listed in an abbreviated format. The full reference for each abbreviated reference citation is included with this publication in a separate file.
- Positional_Accuracy:
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: We estimate the horizontal positional accuracy of the surface-feature interpretations to be better than 100 metres on the ground. No formal accuracy check verified the interpretation. The location coordinate data for oil and gas wells are surface-hole latitude and longitude coordinates from the AER corporate database. These coordinates are reported by industry and may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling. The location coordinate data for mineral exploration drillholes are based on location information from mineral assessment reports provided by industry. The method of surveying may vary greatly depending on the era of drilling and surveying techniques used.
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Elevation data by GPS varies with age of collections and is estimated to be a maximum of 20 metres. This data release may include positional data from deviated drillholes. All depth values are reported as core depth measured along the length of the drillhole.
The depth values from oil and gas wells are measured along the length of the drillhole relative to the kelly bushing which may be up to 4 m above the ground surface depending on the size of the drilling rig.
The depth values from mineral exploration drillholes are measured along the length of the drillhole relative to the ground surface.
The determination of core depth likely involved several different methodologies as the drillcore was collected by a variety of operators spanning different historical periods. Measurement error is estimated to be approximately 1 metre.
Vertical positional accuracy in deviated drillholes is a combination of depth measurement accuracy and the angle of deviation from vertical of the drillhole path. Deviation surveys must be used to accurately determine true vertical depth values in deviated drillholes.

Process_Description: This dataset provides an update to the Metallic Mineral Occurrences of Alberta and Industrial Mineral Occurrences of Alberta datasets (AGS Digital Data 2019-0026 and 2019-0027) and merges them into a single data repository. Additional occurrences were added based on recent data and some of the historical records were updated. Although an attempt was made to normalize, review, or correct every historical occurrence, it is possible that there are still errors and inconsistencies in the dataset.New occurrences were extracted mainly from mineral assessment reports (available at https://content.energy.alberta.ca/minerals/abmarsv2/), AGS publications, and industry NI 43-101 technical reports as well as through other publicly available sources. The occurrences are classified based on commodity and development stage and status into producers, past producers, projects with resource estimate, prospects, showings, and anomalies (geochemical, geophysical, or geological). Additionally, the mineral occurrence dataset was converted from a spreadsheet format to a simple relational database with eight different database tables linked via primary and foreign keys.
   Process_Date: 2025
- Process_Step:
Process_Description: When updating the mineral occurrences database, some occurrences that previously existed as standalone records were grouped with others if the occurrences were in proximity and of the same deposit type and/or had similar commodities of interest. When grouping occurrences, all data were combined under a single occurrence which often necessitated linking multiple rows of data from child tables to a single primary key in the parent table. Previously, every anomalous result was recorded as its own distinct occurrence, regardless of spatial proximity to other occurrences. This approach led to an exaggerated number of occurrences that failed to reflect the true nature of mineralization within a given region. Examples of when grouping was deemed appropriate include samples from a single outcrop or those collected along a single drillhole within the same formation. This revised method provides a more accurate and interpretable representation of mineral occurrences, aligning the data with geological realities and improving their utility for regional analysis and exploration planning.
