      Abstract: This digital data release contains the results of whole-rock geochemical analyses aimed at evaluating the potential of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic rocks in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains to host rare earth elements (REEs) and other economically valuable metals within phosphatic zones. The rock samples analyzed were collected by Alberta Geologic Survey personnel from four locations south of Nordegg, Alberta, over two days during the 2024 field season. Geological observations were captured for 22 stations, and 26 samples were collected for additional analysis. This dataset includes all data generated during the fieldwork and the whole-rock lithogeochemistry results from the lab.This work was completed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta on June 22, 2021.
      Purpose: To provide new geological data generated by the AGS from fieldwork in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, south of Nordegg, Alberta, in the summer of 2024, including field observations and whole-rock lithogeochemistry from samples collected.

    Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Station ObservationsMany of the classifications provided in the Station Observations dataset can be influenced by the geologist's background and experience, the quality and extent of outcrop exposures, the weather conditions, and the limited time available for making observations at the outcrop. Classifications represent field observations; they have not been altered based on whole-rock lithogeochemistry.Structural measurements included in the Station Observations dataset used the right-hand rule. These measurements were collected with a Suunto MC-2 compass.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whole-Rock LithogeochemistryThe accuracy and 95.5% confidence-level precision of the whole-rock lithogeochemical data were estimated in terms of the average percentage recovery (APR) and relative standard deviation (2RSD) values, respectively. However, the 2RSD values include propagated errors of the expected concentrations in the reference materials. Therefore, the 2RSD values also represent uncertainties in the accuracy estimates.Two certified reference materials (CRMs) were submitted to the lab at regular intervals of approximately 1 CRM for every 10 samples. The two CRMs selected for this project were OREAS 124 (Karoo sandstone-hosted uranium deposits), and OREAS 27f (rhyodacite blank chip certified reference material).The average APR of the whole-rock geochemical determinations for OREAS 124 is 102.9%, and 104.2% for OREAS C27f. Accuracy results for individual elements are listed in the "Whole-Rock_Lithogeochemistry_Detection_Limits" file.The average 2RSD of the whole-rock geochemical determinations for OREAS 124 is 14.6%, and 12.3% for OREAS C27f. Precision results for individual elements are listed in the “Whole-Rock_Lithogeochemistry_Detection_Limits” file.Where elements are reported from the laboratory, but certified values are not reported for the CRM, both APR and 2RSD values are listed as -9999.Non-analysis fields with the value -9999 are null.
  Logical_Consistency_Report: Station ObservationsLocations and IDs were checked for uniqueness; no duplicates exist in this data.Station IDs consists of three components: the year (‘24’), the location (CCM – Coral Creek Mouth, LHC – Littlehorn Creek Headwater, RFH – Ram Falls Headwaters, or WRC – Whiterabbit Creek North Ridge), and a sequence number ('001') indicating the order in which the station was visited.Sample IDs consist of two parts: the station ID, which identifies the sampling location, followed by an underscore and a number indicating whether it was the first, second, or third sample taken from that location.Where features were not measured or not observed a value of -9999 is recorded. A value of -9999 also replaced null values in unused sample attribute fields.The lithology (Lith_maj and Lith_min) represents field names provided by the field geologists. These classifications were provided strictly with field observations and have not been altered to reflect additional information from subsequent whole-rock lithogeochemistry or petrographic analysis.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whole-Rock LithogeochemistryAll Sample IDs were checked for uniqueness; no duplicates exist. Spatial coordinates for samples were extracted from the station locations, which represents a single point on exposed outcrop.Observed lithology (Obs_litho), sample type (Smpl_type), and sample note (Smpl_notes) information included with the whole-rock lithogeochemistry results was extracted from the station observation dataset. For QAQC samples, the Lat_NAD83, Long_NAD83, Station_ID, Visit_date, Obs_litho columns contain null values. The molybdenum content in weight per cent for all samples that were not run for overlimit analysis also contain null values. All null values have been replaced with -9999.Values that include a less-than sign (i.e., <) indicate measurements below the lower detection limit (LDL), and values that include a greater-than sign (i.e., >) indicate measurements above the upper detection limit (UDL). Minimum and maximum detection limits for each analyte in the dataset are listed in the "Whole-Rock_Lithogeochemistry_Detection_Limits" file.

   Process_Description: Station ObservationsThe data included in this publication was generated from fieldwork in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, in Southwest Alberta by AGS staff in the summer of 2024. Staff visited 22 stations where observations (e.g., lithology, mineralogy, texture, structures, sample details) and structure measurements were captured in field notebooks.Data collection was completed by writing geological notes in a field notebook and determining location with a handheld GPS unit. Field notes and location data were later entered into a digital format following completion of the field program.Individual stations represent outcrop locations where the field team stopped to record relevant geological information. Station locations are recorded as a single point location, but it should be noted that observations are made at the outcrop scale that can extend several metres (up to ~10 m) from the recorded coordinates.

    Process_Description: GeochemistryThe data included in this publication was generated from fieldwork in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, in Southwest Alberta by AGS staff in the summer of 2024. A total of 26 samples were collected in the field and submitted for whole-rock major and trace element determinations. For internal data-quality control an additional 4 certified reference material samples (i.e., OREAS 124, OREAS C27f) were included for analysis, inserted as roughly every 10th sample. A total of 30 samples are reported, which includes the 26 samples, 4 certified reference materials.Analysis was conducted by Activation Laboratories Ltd., using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) or mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The specific Activation Laboratories Ltd. analytical methods were:- Code 4Litho-Research: samples are subject to lithium metaborate/lithium tetraborate fusion within disposable graphite crucibles, the resulting molten bead is digested in a solution of 5% nitric acid and mixed until completely dissolved (~30 minutes). ICP-MS/OES is used to quantify various elements in resulting solution (https://actlabs.com/geochemistry/lithogeochemistry-and-whole-rock-analysis/lithogeochemistry/).- Code 4B1: samples are digested with four acids beginning with hydrofluoric, followed by a mixture of nitric and perchloric acids, heated using precise programmer-controlled heating in several ramping and holding cycles which takes samples to dryness. After dryness is attained, samples are brought back into solution using hydrochloric acid. ICP-OES is used to quantify base metals in resulting solution (https://actlabs.com/geochemistry/lithogeochemistry-and-whole-rock-analysis/lithogeochemistry/).- Code UT7 (Lithium Only): samples are subject to sodium peroxide fusion within zirconium crucibles, the resulting molten bead is acidified with concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids. ICP-OES is used to quantify lithium in resulting solution (https://actlabs.com/geochemistry/lithogeochemistry-and-whole-rock-analysis/peroxide-total-fusion/).- Code 4F-F: samples are fused with a combination of lithium metaborate and lithium tetraborate in an induction furnace to release the fluoride ions from the sample matrix. The fuseate is dissolved in dilute nitric acid, prior to analysis the solution is complexed and the ionic strength adjusted with an ammonium citrate buffer. The fluoride ion electrode is immersed in this solution to measure the fluoride-ion activity directly.
