    Description :

Abstract : This digital dataset contains grids of the top and base elevation surfaces as well as the vertical thickness of the Granite Wash in Alberta.

The grids are based on stratigraphic picks created or compiled and confirmed by Alberta Geological Survey geologists and were modelled using convergent interpolation techniques.

This digital data product is part of the Geothermal Atlas of Alberta, developed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta.

Purpose : To provide modelled elevation surface grids of the top and base as well as a gridded dataset of the vertical thickness of the Granite Wash in Alberta.

Data_Quality_Information :
  Attribute_Accuracy :

Attribute_Accuracy_Report : Compiled Granite Wash top and base picks included many high-quality interpreted picks from AGS stratigraphers.

Logical_Consistency_Report : The elevation grids represent the elevation surfaces at the top and base of the Granite Wash in metres above sea level. The vertical thickness grid represents the vertical thickness of the Granite Wash in metres. The grids were exported as a discrete surface in Esri ASCII grid format. The grid cell spacing is 500 m by 500 m.

Completeness_Report : All Granite Wash top and base picks compiled and confirmed or created by AGS geologists were used for creating the respective elevation surface grids and vertical thickness grid.
  Positional_Accuracy :
    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy :

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report : The data points used to generate the elevation surfaces are from oil and gas well locations. The well locations may be accurate to within millimetres depending on surveying standards at the time of drilling. At the 500 m grid cell size that the elevation and thickness grids were rendered at, any horizontal positional error will have little impact on the accuracy of the grid.
    Vertical_Positional_Accuracy :

Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report : The vertical positional error of the top and base elevation surfaces and vertical thickness grids of the Granite Wash is a function of the quality of the input pick sets, including pick accuracy and data density, and the geological complexity. The occurrence of errors has been mitigated by it geostatistically evaluating the data points to identify outliers and checking their validity.

Source_Contribution : Precambrian and Cambrian picks used to model the base of Granite Wash
    Process_Step :

Process_Description : Step 1: (Input point data) The Granite Wash top picks and Granite Wash base picks were created or compiled and confirmed by Alberta Geological Survey geologists and represent point datasets defined in three dimensions (X, Y, Z). The vertical thickness of the Granite Wash is calculated by subtracting the elevation of the top of the Granite Wash from that of its base defined as (X, Y, Thickness).

Step 2: (Top and base elevation grids) The top of the Granite Wash was modelled in Petrel using convergent interpolation techniques. Convergent interpolation is a control-point orientated algorithm that converges on a solution iteratively and uses Taylor series projection as the basic gridder. The base of the Granite Wash is a combination of the Precambrian basement top and Cambrian strata top pick datasets. This surface was modelled in Petrel using conformal gridding utilizing the Granite Wash top as the conformal surface. Conformal gridding is based on the convergent interpolation algorithm and conforms to one or two existing surfaces (above and/or below), while still honouring input data).

Step 3: (Vertical thickness grid) The vertical thickness of the Granite Wash was modelled in Petrel using convergent interpolation, with the Granite Wash extent outline set to zero thickness as a reference to constrain the thickness distribution at its margins.
