- Description :
Abstract : This digital data package contains 12 gridded datasets describing four scenarios of geothermal favourability based on geological criteria for three geological units: the Leduc Formation, combined Swan Hills and Slave Point formations, and the Granite Wash. The geothermal favourability grids were created using the GIS-weighted overlay method, utilizing "Temperature," "Aquifer Indication," and "Porosity Thickness" as input grids. Different weights were assigned to each grid in every scenario: Scenario 1 Temperature – 50%, aquifer indication – 30%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 20% Scenario 2 Temperature – 70%, aquifer indication – 20%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 10% Scenario 3 Temperature – 45%, aquifer indication – 10%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 45% Scenario 4 Temperature – 45%, aquifer indication – 45%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 10%The extent of the geothermal favourability grids is determined by the convergence of all three input grids. Consequently, if any one of these grids is absent in a particular area, the favourability prediction for geothermal potential will not be available for that area. The geothermal favourability grid was classified into four favourability classes from 1 (low) to 4 (very high). This digital data product is part of the Geothermal Atlas of Alberta, developed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta
Purpose : To provide gridded datasets describing four geothermal favourability scenarios based on geological criteria within the Leduc Formation, the combined Swan Hills and Slave Point formations, and the Granite Wash.

- Process_Step :
Process_Description : The methodology used to create the grids was the GIS-weighted overlay analysis. The weighted overlay analysis operation overlays several rasters using a common measurement scale and weight criteria according to importance. For this project, regional temperature data was combined with petrophysical, geological, and hydrogeological data to create three spatial data layers: temperature, aquifer indication and porosity thickness. Next, each layer was classified, and favourability scores were assigned to parameter values. Finally, weights to classify the relative importance of each spatial data layer were defined, and the weighted overlay analysis was performed.Listed below are the four different scenarios based on different weight criteria assigned to the input parameters, namely temperature, aquifer indication, and porosity thickness:Scenario 1: Temperature – 50%, aquifer indication – 30%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 20%Scenario 2: Temperature – 70%, aquifer indication – 20%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 10% Scenario 3: Temperature – 45%, aquifer indication – 10%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 45%Scenario 4: Temperature – 45%, aquifer indication – 45%, and porosity thickness (PHI*H) – 10%The extent of each geothermal favourability grid is determined by the convergence of all three input grids. Consequently, if any one of these grids is absent in a particular area, the favourability prediction for geothermal potential will not be available for that area. The geothermal favourability grid was classified into four favourability classes from 1 (low) to 4 (very high).
