This dataset contains picks of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity, identified by the truncation of underlying geological units, for the Lower Athabasca region, Alberta. The study area boundary covers NTS map sheets 73M, 74D, 84P, and 84A, and extends into 73L, 74E, 83I, 83J, 83O, 84B, 84G, and 84H to account for edge effects in the modelling process.
Purpose:
To provide picks of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity used to genereate elevation and paleotopography grids, and subcrop boundary polygons for the Lower Athabasca region.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:

A stratigraphic pick in a well is a point defined in three dimensions (X, Y and Z). The accuracy of the pick, either in measured depth from the kelly bushing (KB), or with respect to sea level, is difficult to quantify. Sources of error include:

- Incorrectly recorded well surface or bottom hole location, which results in an error in either X, Y, or both.

- Incorrectly recorded ground or KB elevation, which results in an error in the Z dimension.

- Incorrect stratigraphic top pick elevation values, or an incorrectly identified formation result in error in the Z dimension.

- Errors in data entry or data transfer, resulting in errors in X, Y and/or Z values. Any errors in the initial data points were reduced in the final data set by geostatistical evaluation to identify and remove outliers.

Logical Consistency Report:

The data were visualized in 3D space to look for obvious erroneous data points, which were removed from the data set or adjusted. Data were geostatistically analyzed to identify potential outliers, and also evaluated for collocated data. All data identified as potential outliers were sent back to a geologist for further analysis.

Where KB elevations were not available, ground elevation was used as the datum to calculate elevation. In these instances, the KB elevation is listed as "-9999".

Where picks were derived from outcrop or core the UWI is reported as "unknown" and the licence number is listed as "-9999".

Completeness Report:
A minimum of 3 wells per township were used to identify the elevation of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity when available. In townships where more than three wells were available, wells were selected based on spatial orientation compared to other wells selected, log data quality, log availability, and log depth. In areas of increased geologic complexity, more wells were picked to aid in the delineation of features such as subcrop boundaries and complex structural or erosional features.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
The location of the picks in the wellbore are accurate to within millimeters or less in accordance with surveying standards at the time of drilling.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:

The vertical positional error in the sub-Cretaceous unconformity picks is unknown. However there is a potential for the introduction of error due to inaccurate kelly bushing (KB) elevations, and mistakes made during selection of the stratigraphic pick.

Potential errors in KB elevation are likely the greatest source of vertical error in this dataset. The KB values are derived by adding the height of the drilling platform to the surveyed ground elevation. If this is not done correctly, it can introduce vertical error in the KB elevation, which is then propagated into error in the measured depth to the pick and therefore also impacts sub-sea pick depth.

Uncertainty in the vertical positional accuracy can also be caused by human error resulting from incorrect placement of the pick on the well logs.

The occurrence and magnitude of these errors are difficult to identify, however these types of errors were mitigated through geostatistical evaluation to identify potential outliers.

Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:

Step 1: 20,575 stratigraphic picks of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity were produced for the study area. An additional 4,507 unconformity picks were made surrounding the study area boundary to account for edge effects in the modelling process.

Step 2: (geostatistical filtering): The points were geostatistically analyzed for the presence of outliers, defined as points with an elevation value that differs more than 50 m from the predicted value of the modelled surface. These data points were reviewed and adjustments were made where necessary to ensure all of the picks represented the sub-Cretaceous unconformity as accurately as possible.
