Abstract:

This GIS dataset portrays an interpretation of the planform distribution of paleovalley thalwegs within the Calgary-Lethbridge Corridor area; modified from Geiger (1968) based on analysis of subsurface data.

This dataset contains the line features of Alberta Geological Survey INF 150, Bedrock Topography of the Calgary-Lethbridge Corridor, and has been exported in a shapefile format for public distribution.

Purpose: To present the paleovalley thalwegs of the Calgary-Lethbridge Corridor area in GIS format.

The digital vector data are topologically correct lines as built and enforced using ArcGIS software. Line features were digitized in the paleoflow direction of the channel. Line features intersect only where intended. In many cases, differences occur in this digital dataset relative to originally published maps because the compiled dataset was corrected and augmented by new mapping based on higher quality LiDAR and DEM imagery.

This dataset covers the Calgary-Lethbridge Corridor study area. All available published paleovalley thalweg mapping data was reviewed for this update.

Interpreted paleovalley thalwegs were modified from Geiger (1968) based on analysis of subsuface data including water well, borehole, and section logs, and geophysical data (airborn resistivity). Paleovalley names were maintained. New names were applied to larger unnamed paleovalleys based on the nearest geographic feature.
