Abstract:
This dataset is part of the three-dimensional (3-D) hydrostratigraphic model of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin in the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor, central Alberta. It represents the structure top of the Scollard Formation in the Sylvan Lake sub-basin. Bedrock units included in the Sylvan Lake sub-basin model are derived from the Geological Framework of Alberta, a regional geological model of the province. The Top of Scollard Formation, provided by the Geological Framework of Alberta, was clipped to the Sylvan Lake sub-basin model domain for integration into a multi-layer hydrostratigraphic model.
This dataset supplements Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Open File Report 2014-10, which includes a full description of the methodology used to produce this grid.
Purpose:
To form part of the Sylvan Lake sub-basin 3-D hydrostratigraphic model, used as a framework for assigning geological information from the subsurface into groundwater flow models.

This grid was derived from the Top of Scollard Formation, provided by the Geological Framework of Alberta. The subsurface stratigraphic picks used as data input to create that grid are estimated to have recorded well locations within a 10 m radius of their actual locations. The cells of this grid are 400 m on each side, so any horizontal positional error will have little impact on the accuracy of the grid, considering this is a regional scale grid and not intended for local scale studies.

Deterministic Grid Alteration Information:
The Top of Scollard Formation, provided by the Geological Framework of Alberta (500 m cell-size) was resampled to a 400 m cell-size grid (i.e., the specified cell-size for the Sylvan Lake sub-basin multi-layer hydrostratigraphic model) and clipped to the model domain.
Geographic coordinates (x,y) as well as elevation data (z) were sampled at each evenly-space grid node in ArcMap and exported into RockWorks15 for integration into the full hydrostratigraphic model.
Algorithm used to re-interpolate each evenly-space grid node: The Scollard Formation grid was re-interpolated in RockWorks15 at a 400 m cell-size node spacing using 'closest point', where grid nodes are set equal to the value of the nearest data point.
Modelling constraints applied: Limited manual manipulation of grids was performed, including: 1) constraining the Scollard Formation to the top of the Paskapoo Formation (equivalent to the bedrock topographic surface in the Sylvan Lake sub-basin); and 2) where the Scollard Formation is absent, adding a constant thickness of 0.10 m to the z-value of the underlying grid node (Battle Formation) to produce a continuous Scollard Formation structure top grid across the Sylvan Lake sub-basin model domain.
