Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is a grid of the thickness of the Haynes aquifer within the Paskapoo Formation. The Haynes aquifer is a regionally extensive body of sand that lies in the bottom part of the Paskapoo Formation. The isopach was created from the modelled results of the average sandiness of 25 m thick slices in boreholes completed within the Paskapoo Formation. Parts of the aquifer are as much as 100 m thick, particularly in the west near the deformation belt and in a region west of the city of Red Deer. The bulk of the unit averages about 50 m in thickness. Given the great range in elevation of the top of the unit, but the relatively uniform thickness of the bulk of the aquifer, we inferred that most of the Haynes aquifer was deposited prior to major deformation with only the western-most parts showing evidence of infill of enhanced accommodation space. Most of the Haynes aquifer is overlain by thick muddy sediments of the Lacombe Member and only outcrops along its eastern edge.
Purpose:
This dataset was created to define the distribution and geometry of hydrostratigraphic units within the Paskapoo Formation.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
There could be a significant difference between sand values calculated at a borehole site and the modelled values assigned to the locations of the centre of regional 1000 m size grid cells.
Logical Consistency Report:
This raster dataset represents the amalgamated thicknesses of >55% average sand values that are not overlain by muddy sediment in 25 m thick slices constructed parallel to the base of the Paskapoo Formation. There are no duplicate locations because the modelling software assigned x-y locations to all data values. Null data are coded '-9999'. Isopach values cannot be less than ‘0.’
Completeness Report:
This dataset represents the thickness values from only those 25 m thick slices in the 3-D model in which the average sand values exceed 55% and are not overlain by muddy sediment in the overlying 25 m thick slice. See Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for a detailed discussion of the selection criteria used.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Horizontal coordinates were assigned to the centre of each cell in the raster dataset.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
We assigned the estimated thickness values in this raster dataset to the midpoint of the 25 m thick slices in the three-dimensional model.

Process Step:
Process Description:
We constructed this isopach a three-dimensional model of the Paskapoo Formation. See Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for model development methodology. The model was developed using geostatistical methods on a series of overlying 25 m thick slices constructed parallel to the base of the Paskapoo Formation. To construct the isopach, we viewed the data in Voxler 3-D modelling software to understand the three-dimensional distribution of the aquifer. We then queried the top of the Haynes aquifer data out of the series of grids by selecting the uppermost cells containing more than 55% sand. These queries produced a single grid whose values contained the height above the base of the Paskapoo datum. We transformed this grid to elevation above sea level by adding it to the elevation grid of the base of the Paskapoo.
