This GIS dataset depicts the surficial geology of the Thickwood Hills Area (NTS 84A/NE) (GIS data, point features). The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

These data comprise the point features of Alberta Geological Survey Map 555, Surficial Geology of the Thickwood Hills Area (NTS 84A/NE).

Purpose: To query and analyze the surficial geology of the Thickwood Hills Area (NTS 84A/NE) in GIS format.

The data comprise the surficial features for NTS 84A/NE derived from fieldwork and LiDAR bare-earth digital elevation model data interpretation.
Completeness Report:
Data were compiled initially for the whole study area through LiDAR interpretation and verified by direct field observations of about 50 field sites distributed across the map area.

We estimate the accuracy of the surface feature interpretations to be better than +/- 100 m on the ground, based on informed judgement of the effects of all combined map production errors. No formal accuracy check verified the interpretation; however, field site data provided control on interpretation. Site locations were measured with handheld GPS units, whose error is estimated at better than +/- 10 m on the ground.

Process Description:

Our processes included

- creating a mosaic and relief shading the LiDAR for available coverage of NTS 84A/NE; relief-shaded images were created from 8 azimuth directions to reduce directional bias and were reduced into a single image using principal component analysis;

- creating a mosaic and histogram matching Landsat 7 scenes; bands 1-5 and 7 were used along with principal component analysis to highlight vegetation and landform features;

- scanning and orthorectification of monochrome airphotos (1:60 000) using LiDAR as the digital elevation model base; these were interpreted as digital stereoscopic imagery

- using Spot-5 satellite imagery to augment landforms for identification;

- digitizing polygons and line features across the LiDAR image of NTS 84A/NE using ArcGIS;

- labelling spatial features;

- checking quality of digital file; and

- proofreading text.
