Abstract:
Coal zone boundary for the McKay Coal Zone is based on subcrops generated by Alberta Geological Survey Special Report 007 (Regional Evaluation of the Coalbed Methane Potential in the Plains and Foothills of Alberta, Stratigraphy and Rank Study). We used additional coal picks from various sourcesto refine the boundary.
Purpose:
To evaluate coalbed methane potential in the Alberta Plains area. In addition, to ensure the data are publicly available to government and industry for coal and CBM studies.

Coal zone boundaries are constructed by combining known subcrops and interpretation/approximation where subcrops are absent. All coal pick locations for this coal zone are captured with the boundaries.

Process Description:
The geologist constructed the boundaries by hand on a paper map. They were then georeferenced, digitized into line coverage and cleaned/built into polygons. Arcedit was used to delete all dangles and sliver polygons, and to add labels to each polygon. Coverage was 'Built' again to create polygon topology and was then converted to shapefile format.
