Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is a shapefile depicting the suitability of geological setting in Alberta for waste management siting. It is derived from spatial analysis of other geological input, including: bedrock topography and morphology; occurrence of major buried drift aquifers, assumed on the basis of buried channel talwegs locations; surficial geology; bedrock geology; and, drift thickness. Areas of the province are ranked Suitable, Unsuitable or Uncertain where possible; other areas are masked by lakes or have insufficient data to rank them.
Purpose:
For use by Alberta government agencies for decision making. Originally developed for optimizing cattle burial locations.

Logical Consistency Report:
Ensured the coverage was free of uncoded or wrongly coded polygons before dissolving polygon boundaries.
Completeness Report:
As complete as the source data. Large areas of Alberta are not yet mapped for surficial geology, so there is no input data for those areas. Also, levels of detail in input data varies across the province for any given theme.

Only areas not covered by the central and southern Alberta Quaternary geology (by Shetsen) or Foothills surficial geology were used; overlap areas were superseded by the Shetsen and foothills maps.
Process Step:
Process Description:
Bedrock geology input preparation: Each formation/unit in the bedrock geology coverage attribute table was assigned a LITHOCODE by L. Andriashek, K. Parks and K. Michael, of Alberta Geological Survey. 3 codes used: A (sandstone), B (mixture of sandstone and shale/clay), and C (shale/clay). A 4th code was later added to denote rocks in the deformed belt (DEF). Polygons were then dissolved on LITHOCODE in Arc/Info.
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
Surficial geology input preparation: 20 Arc/Info coverages were re-classified and appended together to produce the surficial input to the subject dataset, including all or parts of NTS areas 72e, 72l, 72m, 73d, 73e, 73l, 73m, 74d, 82g, 82h, 82i, 82j, 82n, 82o, 82p, 83a, 83b, 83c, 83e, 83f, 83g, 83h, 83i, 83j, 83k, 83l, 83m, 83p, 84a, 84b, 84c, 84f, 84j, 84k, 84l, 84m. Scales of input data range from 1:100,000 to 1:500,000. For each coverage, polygons were classified (SURFCODE) by L. Andriashek as: A (sand and gravel), B (mix of coarse and fine sediments), C (till), BDRK (bedrock), or LAKE (lake). Each coverage was dissolved on SURFCODE, then were all appended into a single surficial coverage.
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
Thalweg data preparation: 1:2,000,000 scale thalwegs were modified by L. Andriashek based on bedrock topography. Thalweg segments were classified by Andriashek by 'stream order': 1 (major thalweg); 2 (medium thalweg); (minor thalweg). Buffered thalwegs based on stream order: 1 - 1500m buffer; 2 - 1000m buffer; 3 - 500m buffer.
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
Bedrock topography preparation: previously digitized linework (i.e. elevation contours) from published bedrock topography maps for all or parts of NTS sheets 83M, 83I, 73L, 83H, 73E, 73D, 82P, 72M, 82I, 72L, 82H, 72E, 83O, 83J, 83G, 83B, 84A, 84B, 74D, 83P, 73M, 84H, 74E, 83I and 83K were converted to one Arc Generate format file, then imported into ArcView from which a shapefile was written out. The shapefile was imported into ViewLog and gridded to 500 m size cells.
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
Drift thickness input preparation: A polygon coverage was prepared showing areas of drift '> 15m thick', '0 - 15m thick' and 'no data' using the following steps. An isopach was created in ViewLog by subtracting the bedrock topography grid from the ground surface grid. The isopach was exported to Arc/Info ASCII raster format, imported into ArcView 3.2 Spatial Analyst, and contoured using 15 m as the base contour. Two new grids were derived from the isopach, one of the study area (STUDYAREA) (which, due to missing data, is not the entire province) and one of regions of drift with the three, aforementioned classifications (DRIFTREGIONS). These grids were converted to polygon coverages. In an attempt to minimize accuracy degradation due to this raster-to-vector data conversion, the original contour line was used to create the drift cutoff area boundaries. The 15m drift thickness line from the contoured isopach was used as the basis for the classified drift thickness cutoff polygons (DRIFTCUT) by merging it with the STUDYAREA boundary to edit/close the boundaries on the contour lines (ArcEdit). The attributes of the classified drift region polygons were assigned using a spatial join between the DRIFTREGIONS and DRIFTCUT coverages (i.e., linking DRIFTCUT polygons to DRIFTREGIONS attributes by 'PUT'ing the label points from DRIFTREGIONS into the DRIFTCUT polygon coverage in ArcEdit).
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
The four input coverages were overlaid in ArcInfo, and the resulting polygons were reclassified based on a decision tree (see Figure 1, AGS Map 330). Finally, the coverage was DISSOLVED on the final classification, and written out to shapefile format.
Process Date: 2003
Process Step:
Process Description:
Added polygons comprising the Canadian Shield in northeast Alberta and coded them ‘Unsuitable’, using ArcEdit. Wrote out a shapefile for public distribution using ArcView 3.2.
Process Date: 2005
